Nov. 25, 2007 – For Immediate Release: Cincinnati Announces New Triathlon. On Sunday, June 29, 2008 at 7:30 am, join 1,200 athletes at the edge of the Ohio River, a brand-new event for the Midwest as Cincinnati hosts the Cincinnati One World Triathlon. Offering both sprint and international distance events, the Cincinnati One World Triathlon will take place entirely within downtown Cincinnati. The swim, bike and run courses will challenge athletes among the urban mountains of downtown skyscrapers, and incorporate the footprints of stadiums for both the Reds and the Bengals.
“Great cities have great marathons and great triathlons,” said Race Director Jonathan Grinder. “Look at Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Chicago. We have our great marathon -- the Flying Pig -- and the great city of Cincinnati, and now we welcome participants with our signature triathlon -- the Cincinnati One World Triathlon.” “The downtown location makes this event perfect for spectators, and provides great opportunities for volunteers who want to be part of a triathlon event.”
The triathlon will be staged at Sawyer Point, on the banks of the Ohio River. The swim will be a point to point downstream course in the Ohio River. The bike course will close all 6 lanes of the Columbia Parkway and include a quick loop through downtown. The run will be in shaded parks along the Ohio River.
The swim course will parallel the Ohio side of the Ohio River, approximately 75 meters from the shoreline. The Coast Guard will provide safety for athletes during the swim portion of the race. Water quality, tested weekly, is excellent. Athletes will swim downstream, taking advantage of the minor current that exists in the vicinity of downtown Cincinnati. Although such a swim is new to Cincinnati, triathletes have been swimming in the Ohio River for years, including at an Ironman race in Louisville, KY held annually each August.
After jogging from the river to the riverside park of Sawyer Point, triathletes start a rolling and challenging bike ride on Columbia Parkway, which will be completely closed to vehicle traffic for the Cincinnati One World Triathlon. Spectacular views of the Ohio River and the Cincinnati skyline will spur athletes onward.
After finishing the bike course, athletes will don their jogging shoes and run through Freedom Park and then past both the Reds and Bengals’ stadiums. Moving toward the finish line in Sawyer Point, a gala finish line welcomes athletes with a celebration, -- music, food and beverages – for athletes, friends and families will complete the Cincinnati One World Triathlon.
The Cincinnati One World Triathlon takes place in conjunction with Paddlefest, the premier canoe and kayak paddling event on the Ohio River. Paddlefest, on June 27 and 28, offers paddling and outdoor activities for the whole family. Pre-triathlon events sponsored by Cincinnati One World Triathlon include the first-ever organized Ohio River Open Water Swim Race on Saturday, June 28, at 11:30 am.
The Cincinnati One World Triathlon is limited to just 1200 entries in its first year and is sanctioned by USA Triathlon, the sport of triathlon’s national governing body.
